Germany: Greenhouse vegetable harvest down 6 percent from last year

In 2023, Thuringia's greenhouses yielded a total of approximately 10,900 tons of vegetables. According to the Thuringian State Office for Statistics, this represents a decrease of 640 tons or 6 percent compared to 2022. The cultivated area within Thuringia's greenhouses slightly reduced by 0.3 hectares or 1 percent from the previous year, totaling 32 hectares in 2023.

The majority of the greenhouse space in Thuringia (83 percent) was dedicated to tomato cultivation. The area allocated for tomatoes was slightly less than the previous year by 1 hectare or 5 percent, totaling 27 hectares. The harvest volume was around 9,700 tons, marking a decrease of 1,400 tons or 12 percent compared to 2022. The yield per hectare was 363 tons, which was 30 tons per hectare or 8 percent lower than the previous year's figures.

Cucumber cultivation doubles
Cucumber cultivation occupied about 2 hectares of the total greenhouse area, doubling in size compared to the previous year. Approximately 2 of the remaining 3 hectares of greenhouse space were allocated for the cultivation of peppers (including chili and bell peppers). Additionally, lettuce, radishes, and other types of vegetables (e.g., eggplants, pole beans) were cultivated on around 1 hectare.
