Pietro Impoco from Il Marchio D'Oro

"The characteristics of a product can make a difference for the chain"

A calendar that almost covers 12 months a year with table tomatoes and red and yellow lamuyo peppers. Tomato segments include smooth round (i.e. so-called bunch tomatoes), cherry, plum, oblong and midi-plum tomatoes. "Il Marchio d'Oro", a company located in Vittoria, Sicily, focused on the latter in particular to improve its competitiveness.

"Being structured to grow and commercialize a wide range of vegetable products is an important distinctive trait for a company that wishes to be appealing," explains sales manager Pietro Impoco.

Boasting a 1,300 sq m processing warehouse soon to be expanded, "Il Marchio D'Oro" guarantees regular company processes thanks to the GlobalGAP and GRASP certifications.

"We invested on Pizzutello midi plum tomatoes from Axia, a product with a distinct texture and shelf-life of which we appreciate the flavor in particular."

"A high Brix level and a particularly appealing appearance contribute to exalting the overall organoleptic properties of these tomatoes. After all, these are the characteristics that make a difference for the chain and that are assessed at every step, from production to placement."

"Feedback from our clients in northern Italy was great and the appreciation for our Pizzutello tomatoes also opened another commercial outlet thanks to one of our partners in northern Italy, thanks to whom we reached a Romanian big retail chain as well. We are very pleased with these tomatoes, and now we are hoping to expand our business with the entire range."

"As we are also producers with over 16 hectares, we are thinking of expanding the area dedicated to Pizzutello as, while generic midi plum tomatoes currently have a production price of €1.00/kg, our variety obtains a margin that is 30% higher. It is a considerable figure, which makes a huge difference on a company's budget."

Francesco Impoco, production manager together with their father Gianni, reports that "Pizzutello tomatoes stand out thanks to their ease of cultivation, a characteristic that is very important to us. Of this variety we also like the high productivity up to the top stems."
