Abandoned greenhouses: a €1.36 million investment wasted in Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan

In Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan, 120 greenhouses constructed for €1.36 million have been idle for 12 years, failing to fulfill their purpose of providing affordable vegetables to locals.

Despite the significant investment, these structures have never yielded any crops. Today, they lie abandoned, with damaged roofs, rusted heating systems, and overrun with weeds.

Only two guards monitor the neglected facilities. Attempts to cultivate vegetables last year were unsuccessful, with the produce never reaching local markets.

The Agrarian Credit Corporation, which leased the greenhouses to entrepreneurs, holds them responsible for the lack of productivity. Nurmadi Alibayev, a Corporation representative, emphasizes that the lessees, not the state, are accountable for repairs or sales. Residents express dismay over the squandering of €1.36 million in public funds.

Unfortunately, there are no current plans to revive or repurpose these abandoned greenhouses in Kazakhstan.
