Status of Andalusia's greenhouse crops at the end of January

According to the latest State of the Crops report by the Agricultural and Fisheries Information Service of the Junta de Andalucía, Almeria's zucchini greenhouses are in production, although some early plantations are being uprooted to plant melon, watermelon, or more zucchini. There are some foci of viruses.

Some cucumber plantations have already finished their production cycle, and after uprooting them, producers are planting new cucumbers or other vegetable crops.

New watermelon plantations continue, in which there is good vegetative development, and melon plantations have already begun.

In Cadiz, Galia melons continue in the phenological state in which they develop lateral shoots. Two weeks ago, producers had to put thermal blankets on the crops because of the drop in temperatures. Last week, they were removed due to the sharp rise in temperatures.

Producers in Huelva have started harvesting strawberries, both hydroponic and planted in soil. La Fortuna, Victory, Rábida, Rociera, Marisma, and Civ- 519 are some of the main varieties being harvested. Thermal protection plastics are raised during the day to protect the crop and avoid condensation and high ambient humidity inside the tunnel. Raspberry production is low because of the cold.

Finally, in Malaga, the Italian pepper, aubergine, and courgette greenhouses of the Vélez-Málaga region are being harvested. The tomatoes that are coming out are of the Daniela plain pear type. Prices are good and returns are normal. There's a lack of water for irrigation and producers are using water from their own wells and treatment plants. The cost of this water is very high as it does not come from the swamp.
