LED producer salutes 60 years of NASA research

BIOS salutes the men and women of NASA past and present, including two of their own – Robert Soler and Neil Yorio – who have worked with the agency for a combined 20 years pioneering LED lighting technology.

BIOS Lighting is continuing the tradition of bringing NASA technology to everyday life. BIOS’ Icarus agricultural grow lighting is the result of over 20 years of NASA research on alternative crop production lighting technology for deep space flight. BIOS’ SkyBlue circadian lighting technology was developed for the International Space Station to help astronauts manage their sleep cycles. Headquartered on Florida’s Space Coast, BIOS continues to support NASA research with products and expertise.

Biological and Horticultural Roots in NASA’s Applied Lighting Research
BIOS Lighting recently compiled a new video in celebration of NASA’s 60th Anniversary. Learn about their connection to NASA and see what makes BIOS Agricultural and Human lighting research cutting-edge.

Each year NASA highlights NASA-originated technologies that have led to successful commercial products. Read about the NASA origins of BIOS Lighting and other cutting-edge technologies by downloading the NASA 2018 Spinoff PDF.

The article details the work of Neil Yorio (VP Agricultural Lighting) and Robert Soler (VP Human Biological Research and Technology), who met at the NASA Space Life Sciences Lab where they were experimenting with LED Lighting technology for space applications.

Neil and Robert focused on photosynthesis and human biological cycles, respectively, and their work resulted in the cutting-edge technology now implemented in the Human and Agricultural LED product lines at BIOS.
