Precise climate control, more light, higher CO2 levels and energy savings:

First Ultra-Clima greenhouse to root in Japan

Last year, the well-known Japanese tomato growing and processing company Kagome Co. got in touch with KUBO to look into the options for using Ultra-Clima greenhouse technology in the Japanese climate. Throughout this process, Kagome was supported by Ultra Clima® grower and cultivation expert Peter Satow. Following several studies and visits to various greenhouse systems, the innovative Ultra-Clima system emerged as the clear favourite.

The benefits of precise climate control, more light in the greenhouse, higher CO2 levels and energy savings were all important factors. The Ultra-Clima uses overpressure, which increases food safety levels. This is as important in Japan as anywhere else.

KUBO welcomed the challenge of constructing this high-tech greenhouse in accordance with strict earthquake-resistance standards. Japanese construction standards can be difficult to reconcile with large greenhouses made of steel, aluminium and glass. KUBO has succeeded in designing the 7-metre high greenhouse in accordance with strict Japanese construction standards, without having to make any significant concessions to the functionality of the greenhouse.

The 2 ha. project is being built in Akeno-cho, Yamanashi Prefecture, and will enter into use in late 2014. KUBO is working closely with the Japanese greenhouse construction company Daisen on the project. While this is the first Ultra-Clima project in the Far East, KUBO has in fact delivered more than 150 ha. of this concept worldwide over the past 8 years.

As a leading player in the Japanese tomato industry, Kagome is making an important step in modernising Japanese cultivation. The expertise built up by KUBO over the years, along with the experience of Kagome's cultivation adviser, means the success of this project is likely to set a precedent in Japan.
