Italy: Automation is key for floating hydroponics

"Floating Hydroponics" is a soil-less cultivation system created 20 years ago in Italy. Vegetables grow in polystyrene panels floating on tanks filled with a nutrient solution.

It is particularly suitable for fast-growing leaf vegetables like baby leaf greens for the fresh-cut sector or herbs like basil. It is possible to carry out continuous cycles without sterilising the soil.

Sower

The produce is always clean and of high quality and less water, fertilisers and pesticides are needed.

Rocket

In order to obtain the maximum yields, automation is key. Rossi S.r.l. was the first company ever to manufacture the 3 machines essential for the productive cycle - precision sower, cutter-harvester and disinfectant machine - 15 years ago.

Basil

There are two versions of the harvester: one only harvests the produce, whereas the other also places it in crates. This has a great visual impact so it is great for sales and it also preserves the quality of the leaves.

Cutter

All the machinery is patented and EC certified. In addition, in 2005, the company also received the Isaac Getz Award for technological innovation.

"We can also work with our clients to design the perfect layout of their crops and provide agronomic assistance," adds Romina Rossi, owner of the company.
