Spain: Swirski-Mite LD: the new benchmark product for cucumber biological control

The results obtained from the use of natural enemies during the winter cucumber campaign have been satisfactory and leave no doubt about the effectiveness of the increasingly popular biological control systems.

In fact, the trust shown by growers from Almeria and Granada in Swirski-Mite LD has turned this exclusive format from Koppert into the benchmark for integrated pest management plans after just three years in the market. Swirski-Mite LD has in fact considerably contributed to reducing the spread of the Tomato Leaf Curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV), which ensures quality, waste-free harvests.

The resounding success of this long-life dispenser is fundamentally due to two reasons. Technically, it is the only system that guarantees biological activity during the winter of the Amblyseius swirskii and the main natural predator of white flies (Bemisia tabaci), which carry the New Delhi virus, among others. Additionally, the product's long duration prevents growers from having to purchase more sachets to achieve the same levels of efficiency, making Swirski-Mite LD the most affordable solution.

It is also worth noting that the Swirski-Mite LD format resolved the problem of the lack of food for the Swirskii during the winter months with the inclusion of new prey mite, which ensures that the Swirskii does not slow down with the lower temperatures and remains well fed. This leads to more active and stable protection against white flies and thrips.

All in all, Koppert Spain has shown to have a number of flexible protocols adequate to the needs of each plantation thanks to its wide product range and the ample professional experience of its technical department, which stays in permanent contact with producers and trading companies. "After the results obtained this year, we expect biological control for cucumbers to expand significantly, as it meets the increasingly strict demands from the markets," explains Javier Villegas, manager of Koppert in Almeria.
