Two-thirds of EU farms smaller than 5 ha

In 2016, just over 171 million hectares of land in the European Union was being used for agricultural production. Of the approximately 10.3 million farms, 65% were smaller than five hectares. Three per cent of agricultural businesses were larger than 100 hectares. These used up more than half of the total area of cultivated land. Only 11% of the company owners were younger than 40. Thirty-two per cent were above the age of 65. This was reported in Eurostat's 'Farm structure survey 2016'. Eurostat is the EU's statistical bureau.

In Romania, 92% of the farms were smaller than five hectares. There were, however, 0.5% of the agricultural businesses that covered an area of 50 hectares or more. These companies grew crops on 51% of all the country's cultivated land. In a few other countries, there are quite a number of farms that were larger than 50 hectares. These can be found in Luxembourg, France, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. In most of the member countries, more than half of the farmed land belonged to businesses with 50 hectares or more.
