Modern-day Romeo & Juliet in a Dutch greenhouse with Polish migrant workers

A.C. Hartman's greenhouse in Sexbierum, Friesland has been the setting for a Polish-Frisian Romeo & Juliet co-production since April 13. The play 'Lost in the Greenhouse' will continue until May 27. In the greenhouse where Frisian and Polish workers normally pick tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers, the play tells the story of a cautious love affair between Klaske, daughter of the boss, and Polish newcomer Wojtek.

In a recent review in NRC Handelsblad, the performance is given 3 out of 5 stars. "It is nice that Eastern European migrants get a serious place in Dutch theatre. Their struggle in this performance corresponds to that of non-Western migrants, a more common topic in theatre plays."

Sense of Community
"The use of Polish actors is a daring move, and in the first part of the performance Polish is the main spoken language." And it's always a party in the greenhouse. "What 'Lost in the Greenhouse' lacks in layers, it compensates for with energy and cheerfulness. The sense of community that the performance conveys here is of great value."

Here is the full review in Dutch.
