Greenhouse built in 1905 officially opened after restoration

Last week the v.d. Hoeven-greenhouse at the Historical Grape Nursery Sonnehoeck dating from 1905 was officially opened after restoration. From the beginning in 1905 Frankenthaler grapes were grown here. Some rootstocks are still from this period. The v.d. Hoeven-greenhouse has a special meaning for Sonnehoeck. The greenhouse was a wedding gift from Helena Johanna van der Hoeven to Klaas van Leeuwen, who married Helena Johanna Catherina van der Hoeven in 1905. It was the first two sided greenhouse in the garden. This model no longer uses the old grape wall. Sonnehoeck did have a number of wall greenhouses in 1905.

In September 2017 the restoration started, which was made possible by financial support from sponsors and the help of volunteers. First all 75 grape trees were cut down to about half a meter above ground. Then all parts of the greenhouse were restored. In 2018 hardly any grapes will be growing there. It takes 5 to 6 years before production has completely recovered. The opening ceremony was conducted by Mayor Agnes van Ardenne-van der Hoeven. The mayor placed, aided by a second cousin of Geo van Leeuwen, a wind vane on top of the greenhouse.

The opening of the restored greenhouse was also a starting signal for the new visitor's season. Sonnehoeck is the only grape nursery that has monumental status where everything is still in original condition and where table grapes are still grown in the traditional manner. Sonnehoeck can be visited, after making an appointment, by groups of minimal ten persons, except on Sunday.
