Veresi Paradicsom builds first Hungarian greenhouse with artificial lighting

Veresi Paradicsom is expanding with 3 hectares this year. The Hungarian grower started 3 years ago with 3.5 hectares. In the new greenhouse that will be built this year, Phillips lighting will be installed. Thus, Veresi Paradicsom will be the first grower in Hungary with 360 days availability. Owner and general manager Zsolt Markus: “The vegetable sector in Hungary and in Central Europe in general lags behind compared to West Europe. The capacity of artificially lighted greenhouses in this region is limited.”

Martin Van Zeijl of Bom Group and Zsolt Markus. Bom is building the greenhouse for tomato specialties.

Zsolt grows mainly specialties, like Marzano, cocktail on the vine and very small cherry tomatoes. He does business directly with retailers. The price is reasonable for specialties, he says. “The prices for commodities are not so good. Growing specialties and investing heavily in marketing and commercial activities, will help to achieve a healthier price point. However, regarding the prices we follow the European market, since Hungary is not a separate market.” Zsolt tells his retailers are also buying from Spain and the Netherlands. “The local for local concept is not strong in this region. It’s a small market.”

Summer is the most difficult season for a typical Hungarian grower. “Last summer we had an average temperature above 25 degrees in five consecutive weeks. Especially at night it was too hot and we couldn’t chill down the plant."

"We don’t use a cooling system yet, but we're considering implementing it. In the colder months we use thermal water to heat the greenhouse. Therefore our operation is green - the CO2 footprint is almost zero."

The new investment - building of the new greenhouse starts now and it will be finished in September. Dutch company Bom Group is in charge of the project.
