Netherlands: Energy consumption down in greenhouse sector

The agricultural community has decreased its energy consumption in 2011, according to numbers by the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Horticulture in particular was able to reduce its consumption. In 2011 this sector used 4,323,000 cubic meters of gas.The year before this it was 4,589,000 m3. The electricity consumption in horticulture has been reduced as well. In 2011 consumption was 5,575,000 kWh. In 2010 this was 6,415,000 kWh.

The total amount of gas consumed by agriculture declined from 4,799,000 cubic meters in 2010, to 4,498,000 m3 in 2011. A total of 3,507,000 kilowatt hours of electricity was consumed in 2011. This is 762 million kilowatt hours less than a year earlier.
