De Ruiter's yellow pepper DRPB1161 is called Sardinero

When new varieties from De Ruiter are tested at growers, it often happens under a specific number. When a variety heads for a major and long-term international success, that variety deserves a beautiful, appropriate name. And that certainly applies for one of the new yellow peppers from De Ruiter, DRPB1161.

Recently, De Ruiter's staff revealed the new name of DRPB1161 in two different test locations, which are testing the variety this year.

Pepper researcher Sanne van Gool from Trial Center Hoogstraten (Belgium) was the very first to reveal the name: from now on, DRPB1161 is called Sardinero! Sanne unveiled the name together with Arend van Silfhout, who is responsible for the pepper tests at De Ruiter. The pepper team of Trial Center Hoogstraten were given a celebratory cake.

Cake for Sint-Katalijne-Waver
After the festive unveiling, the team of De Ruiter left for test station for Horticulture cultivation Sint-Katelijne-Waver (Belgium), where together with pepper researcher Liesbet van Herck the new name was also unveiled in a celebratory manner. Also Liesbet and her team were treated to cake. Sint-Katelijne-Waver cultivates Sardinero as the standard pepper variety in yellow. All other varieties are compared here to the Sardinero.

Sardinero: Strong in all seasons
Sardinero is a productive variety with an average fruit weight of 220 grams. In summer the fruit weight is above 200 grams. Characteristic of Sardinero is its high average fruit weight and very good shelf life, coupled with a high production total. Sardinero has a strong, open, slightly woody crop and medium plant length. This variety can be grown on 2, 3 or 4 stems. The setting is good, also on side shoots. The secondary fruits are heavy and shaped beautifully, the fruit colors nicely as well.
