NL: Water as weapon against Crazy Roots

Water is an infection source for Crazy Roots. Agrobacterium, the pathogen that causes Crazy Roots, multiplies and spreads very easily in water and in water storage facilities. These water facilities like (drip) irrigation pipelines and water tanks are also spaces where organic contamination accumulates. This organic contamination is a breeding ground for Agrobacterium and will stimulate the growth of this pathogen.

Despite disinfection of (drain)water with a disinfection unit like UV, the water can become a new infection source for bacterial and fungal diseases once it has reached the drippers. Humid circumstances and high temperatures can lead to explosive growth of bacteria in a greenhouse.

Intra Hydrocare eliminates Agrobacterium
The effect of Intra Hydrocare on Agrobacterium rhizogenes has previously been investigated by Groen Agro Control. This research showed that a single dosage of 2% Intra Hydrocare eliminates the bacteria.

The practical dosage is 40 ppm Hydrocare (= 0,004%). Dr. Gerwen Lammers from Intracare has conducted a study on the effect of Hydrocare on Agrobacterium rhizogenes with the continuous 40 ppm dosage. The results show that Log3 elimination is reached after 2 days with the 40 ppm Hydrocare treatment. This is 99,9% elimination of Agrobacterium rhizogenes by Intra Hydrocare.

Hygiene is extremely important
Prevention of a Crazy Roots infection remains very difficult. So far hygiene seems the only remedy but that does not guarantee a production cycle without Crazy Roots.

Large scale research by Intracare on rainwater basins shows that 95% of the water samples is safe for irrigation. The limits for bacteria and fungi are barely exceeded. The same research shows that water storages are a source for pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Extra attention for hygiene with these water storages is therefore strongly recommended by Intracare.
