Keep your bumblebees cool

In the upper Midwest, spring has finally sprung. The days are noticeably longer with more sunshine.

Tomato growers will want to be mindful of protecting bumblebee hives from too much sunlight. Although hives are enclosed within a cardboard box, boxes that are directly exposed to sunshine can become too warm, negatively impacting bee activity and hive health.

Bumblebees most effectively pollinate tomato flowers when greenhouse temperatures are between 60 and 80F, so consider relocating hives within the crop canopy or creating a shield to cover hives in their existing locations.
