photos: special screen installations

Size doesn't always matter

"Of course hectares are important to us," says Jeroen de Jonge of PDI. "But small or special projects are interesting for us as well." One of the special projects is restaurant De Kas in the city center of Amsterdam. Quite a number of screen installations were installed on a relatively small area there.

City Nursery
Restaurant De Kas is located in the greenhouse complex of the former Amsterdam City Nursery, which dates from 1926. Since 2001, the 8-meter-high central greenhouse has been in use as a restaurant. The surrounding greenhouses and gardens are used for growing vegetables for the restaurant. The restaurant's owners also have their own farmland in the Beemster polder.

A lot of screen installations
Of course De Kas doesn't have an acreage of many hectares. Still, a fair number of screen installations are used. The meeting room for example is equipped with a ‘double’ roof screen. "One screen for sun protection and one as blackout curtain, so that presentations can be given inside," says Jeroen. These ‘double’ roof screens are also installed in the large and the small restaurant, and their own growing garden is equipped with a horizontal screen installation.

In restaurant De Kas the original, restored greenhouse structure can be admired in full glory. Beautiful, but tough for the screen installers because the structure is obviously not designed for modern screen systems. "A nice job," Jeroen remarks. "You don’t always have to work in a horticultural region to install screens. Even in the heart of Amsterdam, this is possible."
