White paper: Optimizing high-wire cucumber cultivation

What is high-wire cultivation of cucumbers all about? What are the advantages and disadvantages? And how can growers make sure the process is at its most efficient? The answers to these questions can be found in vegetable seed specialist Bayer's white paper on the high-wire cultivation of long cucumbers. This practical guide is the first in a series of white papers entitled “The Only Way Is Up.” Bayer will use these white papers to share its global expertise and to support growers in optimizing their process efficiency.

Raising a high wire plant.

High-Wire Cultivation of Cucumbers
Current market circumstances such as rising labor costs and the demand for reliable, high-quality products all year round have led to a dramatic growth in high-wire cultivation of cucumbers in recent years. Growers rate in particular the reliability of the cultivation system, higher yield, consistent quality, and ease of planning cultivation. Currently, around 19% of long cucumbers are grown using high-wire cultivation. Bayer expects this proportion to grow to at least 30% in the coming five years, with growers in Northern Europe, Canada, and Russia most likely to make the transition.

White Paper As Practical Guide for Growers
The first white paper in the “The Only Way Is Up” series caters to budding and experienced high-wire growers alike who would like to get more out of their cultivation process of long cucumbers. However, the white paper also contains valuable pieces of information for public relations officials, traders, and retailers.

Tom Koot.

Tom Koot, a specialist in high-wire cultivation at Bayer, explains the market circumstances that have led to the development of this state-of-the-art cultivation system, as well as its advantages and focus areas. Additionally, the white paper contains extensive information on the cultivation process, interviews with various experts in the field, and useful tips and tricks. Interested growers can also benefit from a practical and user-friendly calculation tool for use throughout the growing period.

Future Editions of White Papers
The following two editions in the “The Only Way Is Up” series are already in the pipeline and will focus on short cucumbers and the use of artificial light in high-wire cultivation. There will also be special editions covering subjects that are relevant for other interested parties in the chain, such as traders and retailers.
