NL: Bayer to build new greenhouses in Nunhem this year

Bayer's Vegetable Seeds business unit is going to expand its branch with 2.5 hectares of greenhouses and 17,000 square metres of support facilities in Nunhem, the Netherlands. This marks the start of phase one of an expansion plan of 20 hectares in total. The company has submitted the request for the building permit and expects to begin initial construction in the course of 2017.

“Our vegetable seed activities have shown a considerable growth in recent years. To support further growth we need more greenhouses for the improvement of our seeds. That is why we launched an ambitious expansion plan under the name of GreenEx. After years of preparation, we are happy to announce the start of phase one. In 2017 and 2018, we will build 2.5 hectares of greenhouses and will realise 17,000 square metres of support facilities,” says John Willems, Country Head Vegetable Seeds in the Netherlands. “The total expansion plan for the Nunhem branch will amount to a maximum of 20 hectares of greenhouses, 2.5 hectares of natural water basin and a car park for 230 cars, over a period of 20 years.”

During the past eight years, Bayers cooperated with local governments and various partners as preparation for the expansion project, and much attention has been paid to the correct infrastructure, good and safe opening of the area and nature compensation. The request for the environmental permit has been submitted to the municipality Leudal. Bayer intends to complete the construction activities of phase one before the end of 2018.
