China: Glass enables Xin Yuan Xin to outperform solar competitors

Since two years, Chinese tomato grower Xin Yuan Xin operates a 2.2 hectare high tech greenhouse operation in Henan Province. Ever since the start of the commercial project, yields have seen an increase. This year the grower expects a production of 23 kg/m2 for its truss cocktail tomato crop.

The glass greenhouses enables Xin Yuan Xin to harvest during the cold winter, when other Chinese growers with plastic greenhouses are out of business. Especially during the Chinese new year period, Xin Yuan Xin operates at a competitive level.

Xin Yuan Xin was built two years ago by Dutch greenhouse builder Prins Group. According to the greenhouse constructor it was the first commercial glass greenhouse in China. "There were already many glass greenhouses in China, but most of them are for research or demonstration purposes", the company said in a news release. The entire project of Xin Yuan Xin was built with imported technology from the Netherlands. Only about 10% material was supplied local companies.

In the greenhouse, truss cocktail tomatoes (38g/fruit) are grownThe first growing season started in November 2015 and in 5 months 17 kg/m2 was harvested. "This year, the growing season is longer than last year, so we expect a higher production with at least 23 kg/m2."
