The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment, Luis Planas, has reported that the growth of horticulture in Almeria has achieved a new record. The region produced for over 2,380 million Euro, which is more than 13.6% growth compared to the previous season.
In addition, the price paid to producers increased by 0,562 Euro per kilo, increasing the value of horticultural production in Almeria by 14%. The strongest growth was observed in cucumbers (28%), courgettes (23%), aubergines (17%) and peppers (15%).
Acreage has increased with 9% to 53,075 hectares, mainly greenhouses. The growth of agricultural land is mainly devoted to tomatoes (1,234 hectares more), peppers (1,073 ha), Sandia melon (735 ha) and zucchini (659 hectares).
The minister believes that Almeria should be able to guarantee returns for producers. The government of Andalusia want to implement alternatives and mechanisms to the benefit of balanced pricing within the chain. This is in line with the proposals for reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (PAC). The low yield due to adverse weather conditions in November and December was offset by the expansion of agricultural land and favourable pricing of this season, says Luis Planas.
