"Former French Minister: "Genetic engineering a threat to public health and agriculture"

Corinne Lepage, MEP and former French Minister, recently labelled the bio-technology industry in Europe as "mafia". She believes that GMOs are a threat to public health and agriculture. Lepage stated as much during her visit in Madrid, where she presented her book ‘The truth about genetic manipulation’ and spoke in support of the national alliance against genetic engineering.

The MEP said that biotechnology, along with allied governments, have brought forth the myth that, "genetically engineered crops are the most intensively analysed foods in history, and can therefore be considered safe." Lepage argues that this claim, both on Spanish and European levels, is "false".

The Euro Delegate emphasized that decision-making in biotechnology is not transparent and largely based on assumptions that serve the interests of multinationals and ignore those of concerned citizens. Lepage went on to suggest that the transgenic lobby in particular, has managed to downplay potential health hazards.
