Italy: Fragolà season starting at Ceradini Group

Despite the difficult campaign, it was a record season for Ceradini Group, which closed the year with a little over 15 thousand tons. "Finally the work we did ever since the 1980s, when we started cultivating kiwis, is paying off. Ceradini is now associated with high-quality produce," explains owner Massimo Ceradini.

"I believe it is impossible to do everything perfectly, that is why we only focus on a few species such as kiwis and mountain strawberries. We need to work with a precise company philosophy to stand out, which must be shared by our producers."

"We need to work as a team to tackle today's challenges. I have always aimed at creating a partnership among producers, packaging centres and clients, as cooperation is essential to be competitive. We also organise meetings to keep our producers informed as regards the latest cultivation techniques."

"Precisely because we were looking to strengthen the association between Ceradini Group and high-quality products, this year we chose to reward the kiwis with better parameters and paid up to 84 cents per kg to producers. We did this to stimulate those who are capable and willing to grow high-quality fruit."

This was also made possible thanks to a precise sales strategy. "We chose to sell more at the beginning of the season and finish with limited volumes. In addition, even though quantities were abundant throughout the season, high-quality fruit was not affected by this."

As regards the beginning of the fifth season of Fragolà, there is a slight delay due to the low temperatures. Ceradini Group strawberries will be available in the best Italian fresh produce markets starting this week. In addition, some retailers have also started keeping them in stock this season.

The greenhouse system in Velo Veronese, located at 1,200 metres asl, was built in 2012 and holds around 300,00 plants. It covers 4.5 hectares and is the largest mountain strawberry crop in Europe.

"It was not easy to build such a structure, especially in the mountains. All plants must be perpendicular to the ground and have a precise inclination angle in order to be constantly exposed to sunlight. We take care of every detail, and that is why Fragolà has been so successful."

In addition, an innovative traceability system has been implemented - a barcode is placed on every punnet containing information on harvesting date, time and operator.

In addition to its unique intense flavour, Fragolà also has a great shiny colour and shape. "We have developed a specific packaging to exalt its characteristics."

Crates hold 8 250g punnets. The best clients will also receive a Fragolà clock.
