NTUC FairPrice launched a new retail format FairPrice Shop aimed at budget-conscious consumers and will open four more outlets by the end of the year. The 34 fresh vegetable products in this range are 5% to 10% cheaper than the existing Pasar range, even though they are from the same suppliers, benefiting from FairPrice's strong sourcing capability. India a bright spot for Tesco
UK-based retail chain Tesco’s Indian operations seem to have recorded the highest growth in its universe in terms of like-for-like (LFL) sales. But, Tesco India’s LFL growth has not been higher than that of many domestic hypermarket chains. Stores of Star Bazaar, a joint venture (JV) between Tesco and Trent in the country, posted an LFL growth of about 5% in March quarter of FY16, said a source in the know. (business-standard.com)

Industry ponders future of Florida Safeways
Albertsons converted its three remaining stores in Florida to the Safeway banner in mid-June, leaving industry observers wondering why — and what the chain might do next. “We’re just taking a look,” one chain executive told an industry source about Florida, though the executive didn’t elaborate. Latvia: Homegrown veg to fill Maxima’s shelves

From July, citizens in Latvia will be able to buy cauliflower, Chinese cabbage and kohlrabi from major Maxima stores, reports mixnews.lv. Locally grown young potatoes and cabbage has already been available for almost a week. ‘’While the first harvests of these vegetable are not very big, you can buy them in Maxima Latvija’s major stores, but with an increase in yield they will become available in more and more stores. Meanwhile, in the other stores we offer vegetables grown in Lithuania, Poland and Estonia. But as soon as local growers deliver the vegetables grown in Latvia in sufficient quantity, imported vegetables will disappear from the shelves, " said Maxima Latvija’s head of communications Janis Beseris. Agrokor plans IPO on London Stock Exchange for 2017

Croatian food-to-retail consortium Agrokor, is preparing for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the London Stock Exchange, potentially to take place in the summer of 2017. According to a report published in Slovenian daily newspaper, Finance, the consortium is planning to sell a minority stake to a sole investor. At present, it is still unclear whether the IPO will concern the whole group or just the food business. (esmmagazine.com)

Kantar Worldpanel: Netto 'couldn't compete with Aldi, Lidl' in UK market'

Kantar Worldpanel's head of retail and consumer insight, Frazer McKevitt, has given his prognosis on the decision by Sainsbury's and Dansk Supermarked to cease the planned rollout of Netto stores in the UK, saying the discount operation was likely to struggle against rivals Aldi and Lidl. “British consumers are eager and willing to shop with discount retailers but even with Sainsbury’s help, Netto couldn’t match the competition it faced from the likes of Aldi and Lidl," McKevitt said. Pingo Doce and Continente listed among top 10 brands in Portugal

Supermarket group Pingo Doce and hypermarket chain Continente are among the ten most valuable brands in Portugal, according to a ranking published by On Strategy/Brand Finance. In the list, which is led by energy company EDP, Pingo Doce (worth €2.15 billion) placed third, and is the only brand in the top five to register a growth in value - from €558 million to €639 million. Stop & Shop turns food waste into green energy
The supermarket chain’s new green energy facility turns inedible food waste into biogas, and then electricity. The 24,000-square-foot plant, which went on line a month ago, uses waste and returns from stores like the ones in Attleboro and North Attleboro to create biogas through an anerobic digestion process, said Stop & Shop’s Phil Tracey. Supervalu stays ahead of rivals in share of Irish grocery spend

There was no change in the supermarket share figures released by Kantar Worldpanel yesterday, covering the 12 weeks to June 19th with Supervalu, retaining the top spot. All of the major retailers except Tesco increased sales in the past 12 weeks, with Dunnes strongest, growing sales by 5.9%.
