During Dutch Science Weekend on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 October 2016, plant researchers from Wageningen will open their doors to the public at two different locations. On Saturday 1 October, the Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture research location at Bleiswijk will hold an open house, and on Sunday 2 October, everyone is welcome on the Wageningen Campus.
Science Weekend (Weekend van de Wetenschap) has become a tradition in the Netherlands. Every year, the public is invited into the world of science and technology at countless locations throughout the country. A lot of the activities are aimed at younger audiences. Wageningen UR takes part almost every year, by organising public lectures, for example. This year, the plant researchers from Wageningen UR are pulling out all the stops by opening the doors at not one, but two locations.
Glastuinbouwonderzoek
The Greenhouse Horticulture research centre at Bleiswijk houses a huge complex of research greenhouses, which this year is celebrating its tenth anniversary. So Saturday 1 October is a great opportunity to look back at the past and forward to the future. The researchers will give the public a taste of the knowledge being developed there, and explain about the horticulture innovations still in the pipeline.
Plants of the future
The event on Sunday 2 October is themed around plants of the future. On the Wageningen Campus, the Groene Veredeling (‘Green Breeding’) research programme and Wageningen UR will show the public how they currently conduct research, and explain their ideas about the future possibility of growing our own food on Mars. The public will be shown the plants, as well as the methods and technology being used to study plants of the future.
