Will batteries be the new revenue model for horticulture?
Is generating and storing power in batteries Science Fiction? Not in Odoorn in the Netherlands, in any case. There, arable farmer Jan Reinier de Jong has placed a large lithium-ion battery on his farm. The battery stores the power from more than 100,000 square meters of solar panels. He sells this energy when the price is attractive. The revenue model can be interesting for the horticultural sector in the future. For the installation of solar panels, the average hall of a greenhouse offers ample space. With 1,000 panels you are able to put a viable plan into place. Today, an increasingly broad body of opinion is in favor of using the side of the roof, which is out of the sun, as well: here too the generation of power will be profitable.
Personal power for lighting
The generated electricity is useful at many companies, for example to power lighting. If this is not the case, then it can be resold to energy companies. Therefore, the producer must invest in a large lithium-ion battery. The recovery period looks to be short. Placing of the battery offers more advantages. Consider buying electricity at the time the electricity is cheap and using it when it is needed at the company.
