Monsanto opens new seed production facility in Latvia

Seed breeder Monsanto has opened a new facility in Latvia for the production of its hybrid cucumber seeds. The agricultural giant thereby hopes to raise and ensure its production of cucumber seeds to the amount of four tonnes per year.

In the presence of the chairman of the Jelgava District, Ziedonis Caune, head of constructions Andris Ziemelis, various other district administration executives, greenhouse builders and other partners, the event was celebrated with a toast last Tuesday.

The event was also attended by farm manager John Winther, who, with the help of co-financing from European funds, has invested about three million euros in the new hybrid cucumber seed-producing greenhouse over the last three years. Intitial tests proved to be successful, which led to an expansion of the existing farm with one hectare. By now, seed for over 40 hybrid cucumber varieties are in production.
