"no reason why the bags shouldn’t be used for second or even third year crops"

UK: Growers positive about Botanicoir's “Precision Plus”

Late in 2012, Botanicoir launched their latest in product development, the new “Precision Plus” bags for strawberry crops, and are delighted that many growers are already seeing the benefits. After many years of continual product research and development, Botanicoir arrived at a certain blend of specific coir particle sizes most suited for strawberry crops. This “Precision Plus” mix has excellent drainage, AFP and water/nutrient holding capacity, and excellent structural integrity and longevity.

Every batch of the “Precision Plus” mix is chemically analysed to test the standard of buffering. All of the major elements are well within the standards as set by leading agronomists; even the high levels of calcium which are notoriously difficult to reach, are achieved. Growers, both in the UK and abroad, are seeing great results in the first year of using the bags, and the structural integrity of the mix means that, as long as they remain pest and disease free, there is no reason why the bags shouldn’t be used for second or even third year crops.

Stephen McGuffie, Production Director of New Farm Produce, pioneered the use of coir for fruit crops, and has tried the product from various suppliers, but has never been satisfied with the results going into years two and three.

“It is vitally important that the coir used will retain its AFP and the ability to drain freely throughout its life," says Stephen. “Having used the Botanicoir coir mix this season we have seen more rapid root development after planting, with no risk of root death due to poor drainage. We have managed the moisture levels to the point where we can operate at much reduced levels of runoff over an extended period of time with no adverse effect on the production. As a result further savings in fertiliser usage have been achieved.”

Given the late season this year, growers may have expected some root death due to the colder weather. Instead, growers using “Precision Plus” bags are benefitting from the specific grading techniques used by Botanicoir, which provide exceptional drainage and structural integrity.

On top of aiming to provide a good product, Botanicoir say they are committed to providing an excellent service.

“We work closely with Agrovista, and in particular Mark Davies who heads up our soft fruit business, to ensure that from the first point of contact, right through to after-sales consultancy, the grower really is put at ease. We understand what a demanding job the growers have,” says Kalum Balasuriya, Managing Director of Botanicoir, “We always do our best to make our involvement as stress-free as possible.”

Botanicoir is at FruitFocus, Stand 302.
