UK: Tree fruit growers research update day

A technical update day for the tree fruit industry will be held by EMR Association and AHDB Horticulture on Tuesday 23rd February at the East Malling Conference Centre.

The event will provide some of the latest results to be delivered from a number of AHDB Horticulture funded research projects on tree fruit, along with some very useful PhD studies on the advantages of biodiversity in orchards for beneficial pest control.

Two presentations will be made on the progress of both short and long term research into apple canker control, some of which has been investigating alternative control products and comparing their performance to the fungicide product Bellis. There will also be up-dates on projects to develop earwig safe spray programmes in apple orchards and the development of systems to increase hoverfly populations in apple orchards. The latest information on the control of spotted wing drosophila in cherry orchards will also be presented.

New information on improving the quality of long-term stored Gala will be made available along with new understanding of post-harvest technology in cherries. The event will also include up-dates on the two fruit wall research projects being funded on choice of planting material and the optimum pruning techniques to optimise yield and quality.

Anyone wishing to attend the event should contact Charlotte Saunders at AHDB Horticulture on 0247 647 8726 (hort.events@ahdb.org.uk).
