"Lack of competitiveness has favourable effects on vegprices in Almeria"
Lack of competitiveness of countries like Holland and Morocco appears to have favourable effects on the Almeria vegetable season. Overall price levels are high and the Spanish region will likely see a prolongation of its current campaign.
In a country ruined by depression, with unprecedented unemployment rates and an overall decline in economic activity and profit, many place their hope in Almeria agriculture. In 2011/2012 the province had a production record of 3.09 million tons of vegetables (7.5%) with a commercial value of 2,336 million Euro (13.1% more than in the previous season).
An achievement difficult to beat, and yet this year a new record is expected. Vegetables grown under plastic will likely surpass the performance of previous years. Products like the eggplant presently sport impressive price levels, recording increases of nearly 65%. Pepper prices are up 15% and zucchini and cucumber production has increased by 10%, according to the Junta (council) in Andalusia.
