What: Ribbon-cutting ceremony and opening tour of the Rio Grande Valley Vegetable and Education Building.
When: Oct.15, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., including lunch served.
Where: The Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Weslaco, 2415 E. Business 83, Weslaco.

Why: To officially open this new research facility to develop new and improved varieties of vegetables to help the Rio Grande Valley and the state of Texas regain their status as major producers of locally grown healthful fruits and vegetables.
More Details: Over the years, vegetable production in South Texas and the state has decreased to the point of making Texas a net importer of vegetables. This new research facility will enable scientists to use the latest technologies to develop vegetable varieties better suited to local growing conditions. This new facility will ultimately benefit growers, state and local economies, and consumers who will enjoy tastier, locally grown vegetables at more affordable prices, while reducing dependence on imported vegetables.
