Greenhouse roofs to be used as water reservoirs in new trial

On April 19, Bram Meijer from the Westland municipal council and Arie van den Berg of Delfland, will give the official start sign for a new trial: water-retaining greenhouse roofs. The test aims to reduce flooding damage in the region. The trial takes place at the Demo Nursery Westland in Honselersdijk.

Because of its dense building, excess rain water in the Westland of Holland has a hard time being drained away. In addition to more mainstream solutions such as widening ditches and canals, and increasing the capacity of pumping station, the municipality, water engineers and entrepreneurs are investigating new opportunities. One such possibility is now being tested on the roof of the Demo Nursery in Honselersdijk.

By placing partitions with small openings in the roof, rainwater is gradually carried to a ditch or a reservoir. By retention and the delayed discharge of rainwater, waterway levels rise much more slowly. This reduces the chance of flooding.
