Spain: Viveros California cultivates strawberry plants for over 30 years

In the late seventies, D. Antonio Medina Lama began an ambitious pioneering project in the Spanish agricultural sector, using new technology that would contribute to good quality produce and enrich the industry as a whole.

In the ensuing decade his passion led to Viveros California, a company aiming to provide European producers with strawberry plants from the Mediterranean. Today, it is one of the most important suppliers of strawberry plants in Europe. With 500 hectares in various parts of the world, Viveros California provides year-round strawberries.

"We produce in different territories, with different climates and ensure good quality everywhere,” says Francisco Román, from the marketing department of Viveros California. "We maintain broad partnerships with many public and private investment programs, with the intention to provide our customers with the widest range of types and variants."

This diversity, together with the development of new plants, ensure that Viveros California has a lot of production possibilities. "Our activities are mainly in the open air, because it is a semi-intensive production, although the last decade, the size and shape of the strawberry is becoming increasingly important in order to develop a very specialized production program," Francisco says.

Viveros California supplies its plants to more than 30 countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia; from the UK and Holland, to Turkey and all the Mediterranean countries.

Viveros California has over 30 commercial strawberry plants per year. They include Camarosa, Festival, Sabrina, Benicia, Fortuna, Candonga, Viva Ptricia, Amiga, Ventana y Primoris, and Albion, Portolas, San Andreas, and Aromas y Selva.

"The strawberry is one of the most widespread plants in the world, and today the strawberries are grown anywhere on the globe. The strawberry, in contrast to other crops, adapts itself well to the climate and the seasons, and therefore meets the wide variety of environmental conditions," explains Francisco Román.

"It is clear that a unilateral system is not flexible enough to meet today’s market demands. Right now, mainly because of the complexity of demand for variation, there is much more control and there are a lot more requirements that the strawberry must meet. Strawberry producers must adhere to the best phytosanitary requirements these days.”
