total of 35o hectares:

Plans for new North American greenhouse vegetable production projects

An impressive array of new or expanding greenhouse vegetable operations in North America has been announced over the last several months. Over 350 hectares, in 28 different states and provinces, are in the planning stage or already under construction.

When compared to the total existing greenhouse vegetable production area in the USA, 910 hectares, the planned new USA greenhouse vegetable area represents a 30%+ increase in area.

While some of these projects are only in the beginning stage of planning, others are under construction. Most of these projects will need help with equipment and supplies for their expansion and some are recruiting for help with financing. Some may not come to fruition, but enough may be completed to significantly increase the USA greenhouse vegetable production area. The results of this expansion could have an effect on produce pricing throughout the country. It could also affect foreign imports of greenhouse vegetables into the country.

Data collected for Canada has over 39 hectares for 3 proposed projects, and 44 hectares for 4 projects in Mexico.

Details on all of these proposed projects, including the name of the company and internet contact/information link, are available in the “2015 North American Greenhouse Vegetable Producing Companies” publication.
These projects are listed on the “Proposed Projects” tab in the publication. Also listed are over 730 current North American growers, with information and contact links. The website, with ordering information, for this publication is also available at: www.cuestaroble.com
