Geothermal Energy – a solution to the greenhouse industry

Geothermal energy is becoming an attractive energy alternative to companies in the greenhouse farming industry. Aside from contributing to a sustainable environment, geothermal energy is considered an affordable source of energy. This has been confirmed by nine greenhouse owners who have initiated the Dutch Vierpolders project.

In 2012, PanTerra carried out the geological investigation for the Vierpolders project at the request Hydreco GeoMEC B.V. The project is approved and subsidised by the Council of South Holland and the Dutch Enterprise Agency.

The investigation indicates that the geothermal reservoir is located in a sand layer at depths of 2200 meters. The temperature of the water is considered to be between 80°C and 85°C. In order to extract the heat stored in the porous sand layer, two wells (doublet) will be drilled: one well will be set to extract warm water from the sand layer, whilst the other will inject cold water into the layer.

The drilling process is set to start at the beginning of June 2015. The sucker rods have been already placed. By mid-2016, the geothermal installation is expected to heat approximately 50 hectares of greenhouses.
