Kralt Greenhouses Ltd. has been growing a variety of cut flowers and potted plants at our Flamborough, Ontario location since 1972. Brothers Jerry and Peter Kralt began the business with their father Jacob (1915-1978), with the purchase of the property and building of 20,000 square feet of greenhouses, and have operated and expanded the business over the years. We currently have 100,000 square feet under cover, and also grow about 5 acres of cut sunflowers in the summer. Peter’s son Jacob is working toward carrying on the family tradition for another generation, along with Jerry’s son Garett.
We are a wholesale operation that specializes in providing a high quality product to discerning retailers, either directly or through the Ontario Food Terminal Farmers’ Market. We also sell through a number of wholesale distributors in Southern Ontario. We have spray chrysanthemums and cut lilies from April through December, potted spring flowering bulbs from December through April, as well as bedding plants and hanging baskets in the spring. For the product that is sold directly to retailers, we focus on producing a high quality item in attractive packaging, making sure that every item gets a pickontario.ca label.
We are also conscious of the need to be environmentally responsible. In 2009 we installed a biomass boiler, and 95% of our heat is now provided by wood pellets. We have also steadily increased the use of biocontrols for pest and disease management, with a goal of virtually eliminating the use of chemical pesticides.
We have been blessed to have good relationships with our customers and suppliers over the years, and consider that to be one of the very rewarding aspects of operating our family business.
