Danish grower Jens Juel Larsen, SOGO Team:

Adding value with greens

At the moment, selling plants in decorative pots is a common practice for ornamental growers all over the world as it helps them to adapt to trends easily. Also the Danish mini phaleanopsis grower SOGO team is adding value to their ornamentals by using ceramic and glass pots. However, they do more. Lately, they introduced a successful concept; they started to add greens to the mini phaleanopsis in pots. "The European demand for our phaleanopsis with greens rises sharply", says Jens Juel Larsen, Director of SOGO team Denmark.

The company is owned by a Taiwanese company that breeds and produces young plants for orchid growers all over the world, including SOGO Team Denmark. In 2004, the mini phaleanopis was developed in Taiwan and in 2009, SOGO Team started to grow these plants in their 7,500 square meter sized high tech greenhouse in Denmark. The greenhouse is equipped with all necessary techniques for growing high quality phaleanopsis, the greenhouse is, for example, 100% computer controlled. Annually, 1.8 million 6 cm mini phaleanopsis are produced in this greenhouse and are exported to countries all over Europe. "Our main market is Germany" says Jens Juel Larsen.

Adding value

"At the moment, the mini phaleanopsis is a very popular plant in Europe. Therefore, people are familiar with the plant and new added value is required to keep up with the new trends" says Jens Juel Larsen. In order to add more value to the plant, the Danish grower pays a lot of attention to the appearance of the plant. Therefore, they started to sell their plants in decorative ceramic and glass pots.

However, they are going further than placing their plants in decorative pots. Lately, they added greens to their mini phaleanopsis in pots, which gives the plant a distinctive look. "It can be seen as the dress of the plant; different greens will give the plant a different appearance." The SOGO Team purchases the greens at different growers in Denmark and successively exports the mini phaleanopsis in pot with greens to countries all over Europe. "In all countries we see an increasing demand for this concept", says Juel Larse,

Future plans

In the future, SOGO team will introduce new mini phaleanopsis varieties and more concepts that keep up with the trends. "Our mother company in Taiwan keeps developing new varieties of mini phaleanopisis, which enables us to keep introducing new varieties to the European market. Besides that, we continue to focus on the trends and ways we can adapt to European trends by using decorative pots and new concepts"

SOGO team Denmark will be present at the Nordic Flowers Expo in Malmö, Sweden.
