Michele Pavano, P-TRE:

"Grower specific approach to find the right gutter design"

A gutter system inside a greenhouse is of paramount of importance in high tech greenhouse horticulture. Michele Pavano, General Manager of an Italian based greenhouse gutter system manufacturer, P-TRE, explain why the systems are so important and what service is needed to install them properly.

P-TRE installs gutter systems worldwide in existing greenhouse projects that are being retrofitted or newly built greenhouse structures.

The growers that invest in gutter systems are medium and high tech growers in emerging greenhouse areas of Europe, Russia, North and Central America. Gutters are key to improving growers profits and product quality; they allow recirculation of irrigation water and improved climate control due to recirculation of air underneath the crop. The crops suffer less from stress due to the reduced temperature inside the growbag and or growing substrates. Because of the fact that the growbags are no longer in direct contact with the soil, pressure from pests and diseases is reduced.

According to Michele Pavano, 2014 was a very busy year for P-TRE, working closely with greenhouse constructors and consultants. "Over the past two years, we have achieved good results, thanks to the fact that we gained a lot of experience from projects that we have installed in the past" said Michele Pavano. "Thanks to installed projects all over the world, we had the opportunity to showcase our experience and knowledge on advanced gutter systems. New and existing customers and growers have experienced what we can do for them and how we cooperate with them to find a custom fit solution."

Some of the possibilities of P-TRE. This is a standard size gutter, but recently the company also developed a 32 cm wide gutter that enables inter planting for the growers who grow year round without crop change.

According to Pavano, many growers and customers are now confident enough with P-TRE to create and install personally designed projects that fit their needs. "The smallest details can have a major influence on the rest of the business, whether it is a gutter system or a greenhouse design, every detail matters. That is why we find it very important to spend extensive time with our customers to design the perfect gutter system."

Pavano explains, two neighbour tomato growers with the same greenhouse structure can require a completely different gutter system due to cropping strategies and farm management. "We will explain the influence of each system in their growing operations."

P-TRE has performed extensive planning and installation of gutter systems all over the world. "Once a grower decides to install our gutters, we will work closely with the grower to plan out the best system plan. Some of the planning includes, the growers exact needs, which materials are best to use, and more importantly, when do they project to plant their first crop? Project logistics includes coordination of engineers, production machine and installers. We have machines positioned in various marketplaces and we arrange transportation to move machines to each job site. The machine is essential for creating special project cuts and designs for each system. "

In terms of the system investment, Pavano recommends growers to analyse their needs before deciding which system is best for them. "Customers should realize that investing in a cheaper, simple system, does not always provide savings and optimal production. Adding accessories later actually is more costly than developing the right system from the get-go."
