On non-porous floors, such as concrete, this is not that easy. There will always be uneven parts. That's usually because the floor is not level. In addition, stagnant water will affect lower roots, with a higher risk of fungal diseases.
ErfGoed from Moerkapelle has developed a patented solution for exactly that problem: the ErfGoedVloer®. This ebb and flood floor is made of porous material with a plastic top layer. The water is drawn up through perforated tubes, so that the water comes up through the porous material uniformly. Once the plants have enough water, excess water is drained, and no layer of water remains under the pots.
In addition, anti-fog foil will be placed directly under the plastic top layer, so the porous layer can also be used to cool the floor without wetting the crop.
Stan Vanderwaal of Rainbow Greenhouses Inc. in Canada has experience with the ErfGoed floor. He 'uses' the floor to cool the place down, and to achieve a good climate. Stan: "The floor has an even surface and looks very neat. Consequently, each plant gets the same amount of water for the same length of time. That is a big difference compared to the sloping concrete floor. This gives me much more uniform growth which, in turn, benefits plant uniformity. That means more often than not that you can harvest the crop at the same time. That makes a vast difference in delivery. And we hardly have any plant loss anymore.”
