Anthura is convinced of the worldwide possibilities of the Phalaenopsis

All over the world the orchid is a popular plant. In particular the Phalaenopsis, a variety of the orchid, is huge in popularity. It is by far the number one plant on the Dutch Auction. Mattijs Bodegom, marketing and communication manager of breeder Anthura says: “Our Phalaenopsis varieties are grown all over the world and are named after the world’s great cities. We are convinced of the worldwide possibilities for Phalaenopsis.”

Anthura

Anthura is breeder and propagator in Anthurium and Phalaenopsis for both cut flower as potplants. It finds its breeding history, like the name suggests, in Anthurium. Since 1995 the assortment was extended to Phalaenopsis. The company is world market leader in Anthurium and is uniquely positioned as one of the world’s leading breeders of Phalaenopsis. At the moment they provide professional growers with young plants in more than 70 countries.

Constantly innovating

"We are breeders and we are constantly innovating and striving to create exciting new varieties in different colours and shapes that not only satisfy growers but also traders and consumers worldwide. "Anthurium and Phaleanopsis are our main products, but we also breed other orchids lines" says Bodegom.

These orchid lines consist of indoor and outdoor orchids. The indoor orchids are deviating types of orchids and the outdoor orchid is called 'Garden orchid'.

Trends

“Flowers are subject to trends, worldwide different trends can be noticed. It is, however, difficult to respond to these trends”: explains Bodegom. The long process of breeding and propagation is what makes it difficult. “As we breed new varieties which will be on the market no earlier than 6-8 years later, you can also say we can initiate trends by providing future products”: says Bodegom.

A demonstration greenhouse has been installed at the headquarters in the Netherlands. “Regularly we receive visitors and we show them our varieties”. In the greenhouse not only commercial varieties are shown but also future ones. “It is in this primary phase that growers can inform us about their preferences. Sometimes also other visitors have a preference for a particular variety and their feedback will also be registered in our system”. The information Anthura gets from their visitors is an important source for their breeding department. “It is our constant search for perfection in delivering customized varieties for our customers, that makes us unlimited in varieties.”

Assisting growers

Anthura delivers more than just young plants. The growing process of Phalaenopsis is quite difficult and therefore, Anthura offers extensive breeding guidance during the entire cultivation process. “We also advice on choice of assortment and offer a service-oriented after sales” Bodegom says.

“Participation in joint promotion campaigns, attending trade fairs, cooperation with trade and supporting growers in the promotion of their own Anthura varieties are just a few examples of the activities Anthura undertakes to support growers”.
