Less fusarium thanks to improved growing blocks

The use of Grodan's capillary stone wool, in combination with higher growing blocks, ensures a lower impact of Fusarium in pepper crops. Huub Hendriks, production manager at Gipmans Plants, says that tackling Fusarium was the goal of the tests. Huub: "The tests have certainly been successful; they show that the water content in the block is divided evenly, which allows for better development of the roots. The water is absorbed quicker in the upper layer, resulting in lower algae formation. The capillary action of the stone wool in the Pro Paprika block also plays its role." Huub sees no difference between Plantop and Pro Paprika.

Various tests have been conducted with several clients of Gipmans Plants. Huub has heard many positive comments about these tests, because everyone has seen their Fusarium problems reduced. Huub: "The news is spreading; we see that there is interest from pepper growers in these growing blocks from Grodan." The number of tests will continue increasing this year. "We are manufacturing exactly what the customers want." Times have changed. In the past, plant cultivation companies determined which pot would be used by all clients. Growers now increasingly see the importance of using blocks that suit their needs.

The results achieved with these blocks can only continue improving. Due to the fact that these pots have more cm3, they also contain more water. "Once we have a whole floor full, we can adjust the water supply accordingly for the best results," says Huub.
