Hong Kong: New project launched at University to yield data

"We're thrilled to announce that the Hong Kong Baptist University buildout project has finally been handed over, and we eagerly anticipate the research data it will yield," says Ray Lok, CEO of Full Nature Farms, a vertical farming company based in Hong Kong that recently opened a research system for the Biology Department at the Hong Kong Baptist University.

This new facility, situated atop the campus, features a modern design incorporating transparent solar panels, and renewable energy to even out the energy use. "To maximize space efficiency in Hong Kong's tight quarters, we've implemented a track-less mobile shelving system, ensuring a smooth and practical daily operation," Roy explains. The grow rack is adaptable and upgradeable, allowing for additional layers or a switch to a vertical grow pipe design as needed.

The project
This project boasts several unique features, including a rail-less movable shelving system for the grow racks, the in-house designed waterproof LED grow lights, an automatic dosing system, and thirteen of the company's latest ADAMS 3.0 control systems. Full Nature Farms' control system is at the heart of this setup, developed in-house as a cost-effective alternative to PLCs. On top of that, the transparent NFT/DWC trays facilitate root zone observation, allowing for plentiful root growth.

With over 100 sensors integrated into the system, including pH, EC, PPFD, water level, iAQ, CO2, leaf sensors, and more. This versatile system is compatible with aquaponics, hydroponics, and organic fertilizers, ensuring biofilm and clogging are non-issues. The custom-designed LED grow lights ensure longevity and precise spectrum control, minimizing heat production. In-house developed iAQ+CO2 sensors provide accurate air quality monitoring within budget constraints.

Maintaining low-cost
This approach allows Roy and his team to bypass the typical wiring costs and time associated with a conventional PLC design. "With each ADAMS capable of controlling hundreds of devices and sensors, we can effortlessly manage thousands of devices if necessary. Upgrades and system modifications are simple tasks with our systems."

Full Nature's open-source ADAMS 3.0 software liberates users from proprietary ecosystems and monthly fees. According to Ray, using a PLC control system or systems from Western brands would have made it impossible to complete this project with so many features within budget.

"Yet, we're excited about our upcoming university deployment projects this year. Stay tuned for updates," Ray shares excitedly," Roy points out.
