Established in 1955, Meyers Farms is Niagara-on-the-Lake's (Ontario, Canada) premiere choice for quality flowers and fresh fruit. With an established/modern greenhouse facility and accompanying farms, as well as our own fleet of trucks, we have grown steadily through hard work, a commitment to quality, and the fostering of our horticultural and agricultural expertise. 

 

We are seeking a full time Head Grower to play an integral role in both the operational and strategic activities of the Growing department. This proactive individual will work and plan/discuss with the other Head Grower who oversees the crops to ensure maximum production and high quality are obtained.

 

The successful candidate must be motivated, enthusiastic, and a self-starter who can work both independently and in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities of this Role:

  • Proven leadership skills, fostering trust and positive working relationships at all levels to meet individual and common goal
  • Manages employees respectfully and efficiently and regularly evaluates their performance
  • Motivates, directs, and develops team members
  • Direct staff in the control of pests and diseases, using IPM and pesticides
  • Manage the production from planting to harvesting
  • Plans to structure work efficiently in coordination with the Head Grower - Crop, and coordinates activities with other departments
  • Monitors the crops to ensure quality growth & harvesting flowers
  • Monitors ventilation, irrigation, and other environmental conditions
  • Assists in production planning
  • Assist in alignment of growing and planning with space and production schedules
  • Ensure compliance of company policies, procedures relating to employment and grow standards
  • Ensures safety rules are understood and followed
  • Ensures sufficient supplies for efficient work schedules
  • All other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Post-secondary education in horticulture or related experience
  • Valid Pesticides Application License
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office
  • Experience with using greenhouse control systems
  • Experience with Argus environmental control system an asset
  • Thorough knowledge of plant pests and diseases
  • Minimum 5 years greenhouse experience and 10 years total related experience
  • Commitment to health and safety
  • Ability to adapt to new technology
  • Basic math skills
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to drive pullers (and tow motors if trained) a strong asset
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish an asset

 

Working Conditions:

  • Standing/walking/driving/reaching/bending
  • Repetitive motions
  • Pushing/pulling carts
  • Lifting/carrying varying weights up to 20 kg
  • Occasionally working from heights
  • Average 42.5-50 hours/week
  • Overtime required periodically (including weekends)
  • Periods of high heat and humidity or cold
  • Operation of desktop computers or peripherals
