Less French cucumber greenhouses, but more cucumbers

"According to forecasts as of June 1st, 2025, French cucumber production is estimated at 183,100 tons for the 2025 season, a higher level than in the last four years. In May 2025, prices were 11% lower than in May 2024, but 6% higher than the average for 2020-2024 over the same month," according to the Agreste economic outlook.

Good yields expected in greenhouses
"The national cucumber area in 2025 is expected to decrease by 2% from last year, to 1,028 hectares. This drop would only concern greenhouse crops. Thanks to higher greenhouse yields (with plantations in good health), French cucumber production in 2025 should increase by 7% from last year, to 183,100 tons, which is 3% higher than the five-year average (2020-2024). The increase in greenhouse production would be particularly marked in the Pays de la Loire region (+16% from last year and +21% compared to the five-year average) and, to a lesser extent, in the southeast basin (+4% from last year and compared to the five-year average).

Plant rotation in the Centre-West and East basins intensified in May with the grubbing-up of the first crops, creating a slight drop in production while waiting for the plants to mature. At the same time, production picked up in the southeast."

Prices above the five-year average since the start of the campaign
"While the European market has been rather undersupplied, the French market has enjoyed a moderate supply, allowing for high prices at the start of the season. In March, production volumes increased. Sales maintained a certain fluidity thanks to promotional actions. Prices were revised downwards. In April, a number of warm, sunny days boosted French supply and demand. Cucumbers from Spain and the Benelux countries competed with French products, putting pressure on prices, which fell as the weeks went by. In May, since the weather cooled off after the first week, the market became more complicated. Demand lacked vigor, while foreign competition intensified, especially from the Netherlands. The result was a gradual fall in prices, below last year's prices but still above the five-year average.

Between January and April 2025, exports (6,400 tons) and imports (31,500 tons) were up by 2% and 9% respectively, compared to the same period last year. The foreign trade deficit in volume terms (25,100 tons) increased by 10% from last year.
