The beginning of summer has brought welcome news for Ukrainian consumers, prices for staple vegetables, particularly tomatoes and potatoes, have fallen significantly compared to May. This is based on data from major retail chains as of June 29, 2025.
The most dramatic change is seen in the price of new-season potatoes, which have dropped nearly threefold, from over 89 UAH/kg (€2.07/kg) in May to 27–31 UAH/kg (€0.65–0.72/kg) by late June. Other varieties have also become more affordable: regular potatoes now sell for 34 UAH/kg (€0.80/kg), while red potatoes range to 40 UAH/kg (€0.90/kg). It is worth noting that the current price of potatoes on the Ukrainian market is, on average, 30% higher than during the same period last year.
Tomato prices are also trending downward. Plum tomatoes have decreased from approximately 134 UAH/kg to 111 UAH/kg (€3.12/kg to €2.58/kg), while pink tomatoes — still the most expensive — now range between 115–120 UAH/kg (€2.67–2.79/kg). The price range of red tomatoes varies the most by store, ranging from 73 to 119 UAH/kg (€1.70 to €2.77/kg).
As of late June, tomato prices in retail chains average between 80–140 UAH/kg (€1.86–3.26/kg), nearly three times higher than during the same period last year. On wholesale markets, prices are more moderate, ranging from 50 to 80 UAH/kg (€1.16 – 1.86/kg).
The main reason for the elevated prices is the absence of open-field produce. Currently, only greenhouse-grown vegetables are available. According to agro-expert Maksym Hopka, prices are expected to ease once open field-grown tomatoes enter the market, possibly as early as mid-July.
While the outlook this season is more favorable, harvest volume and quality remain highly dependent on the weather.
