US (MA): Growers excited for strawberry season despite rainy weather

All of the rain that Berlin, Massachusetts has been getting on the weekends has been good for a tasty summertime treat; locally grown strawberries. Rows of red and green line Cordelia's Farm in Berlin. The Christmas-like colors are actually a celebration of summer as strawberry season is in full swing.

"We've been picking for the stand for two weeks, which means we were starting to pick in May," said Cordelia's Farm owner Tim Wheeler. "With climate change, we've noticed a drift. Asparagus season was early; strawberry season was early. We noticed that the last couple years."

Wheeler says the shift in the season, mixed with three months of rainy weekends, have created challenges for the small farm.

"It used to be that school got out and families would come and pick strawberries because it would still be a good part of the season left," Wheeler said. "With the season sort of shifting earlier, it means that it's a little more difficult for families. And then if you get rainy weekends like we've had, people are less likely to pick in the rain on a weekend."
