CAN: Lakeshore continues effort to restrict commercial greenhouses

Lakeshore is continuing its quest to limit large-scale greenhouse operations, though its mayor acknowledges the industry can't be barred completely. At a meeting earlier this week, Lakeshore council agreed to restrict where commercial greenhouse development can be located. The municipality will also attempt to mitigate any potential impacts from the industry, such as smell and light pollution.

"Greenhouses have been a concern for many of our residents, and we're happy to see our vision for a comprehensive regulatory regime take shape," said Lakeshore Mayor Tracey Bailey.

"While we have recognized that we are not able to stop greenhouses altogether, these measures ensure that our residents, as well as Lakeshore's rich agricultural land, are protected."

The changes would modify a proposed Official Plan amendment and are still subject to approval from Essex County council, which has some authority over the municipality. If approved, commercial greenhouses would have to be at least one kilometre from secondary settlement areas, 550 metres from residential properties, and five kilometres from the Hallam Observatory. The elimination of lighting and odours would also be required.
