Nearly 150 farmers attended a technical talk on BASF | Nunhems' global solutions for growing long cucumbers that the company held on May 29. This includes its complete range of varieties, with which it manages to cover the entire crop cycle, to its plant health solutions.
"The goal is for farmers to share their experiences with our varieties," stated Antonio Manuel Alonso, a cucumber specialist at BASF | Nunhems. It's important that producers exchange knowledge and speak about their needs in this type of forum, he stressed.
The seed company presented its long cucumber portfolio to the attendees. All of their varieties yield quality, very dark, uniform cucumbers without bottlenecks.
"We don't elevate any material to commercial status just because it has the resistance demanded by the market," Alonso stressed. The company guarantees the quality of its varieties with the Q-green seal, he said, adding that all new commercial varieties have four resistances: yellowing virus, yellow veins, powdery mildew, and CGMMV.
Twice as many options for early fall
Caspian, for spring and early autumn transplants, is the latest addition to BASF | Nunhems' long cucumber range. It joins Calado, the company's reference in this segment, giving producers twice as many options.
Both varieties stand out for their resistance to head scorch and fruit overripening, which do not yellow, as well as for their high yield. The difference between the two lies in their plants. Calado yields fruits earlier and is more "powerful", while Caspio is "calmer".
"Calado is a production machine," Alonso stressed, highlighting its ability to develop two fruits that do not ripen simultaneously per internode, which allows for greater production.
Another thing that differentiates the Caspio is that it yields fruits of the same size, even at the top of the plant.
Completing the cycle
BASF | Nunhems completed the cycle with Naval and Tanker. The former is for transplants from September 1 to 25, and the latter from September 25 to October 10.
Naval is an early and vigorous variety, with a great capacity for regrowth and little tendency for fruit abortion in cane. Tanker, on the other hand, stands out for its vigor and root power, which make it highly adaptable to these later dates.
The seed house ends the cycle with Sedal, for transplants from October 10 onwards. This cucumber for the late segment has "an unparalleled production" that has allowed it to "lead this market".
With these varieties, BASF | Nunhems completes the greenhouse cucumber cycle, offering varieties with a complete resistance package and that yield high-quality fruits.
