North Dakota Department of Agriculture provides funding for Farm to Schools program

The state of North Dakota is giving local farmers a total of about $204,000 in grant money. The goal is to get school children to eat more homegrown food.

The CDC says that a majority of children and teenagers do not eat the recommended serving of produce. The North Dakota Department of Agriculture is working to change that.

A good place to start is the Farm to Schools program, a partnership between school districts and local producers who provide fruits and vegetables to be served in school lunchrooms. These efforts have been shown to improve child nutrition.

"It really does help a lot of the kids connect with agriculture and connect with food," said Doug Goehring, commissioner of the N.D. Department of Ag.
