Lidl Italia has invested over €2.1bln in Italy over the past five years, primarily in new stores, logistics centres, and renovations, reflecting a 35.7% increase compared to the previous five-year period. According to a socio-economic impact report by The European House - Ambrosetti (TEHA), presented at the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, Lidl Italia contributed €7.6bln to Italy's GDP in 2023, representing 0.4% of the total and a 5% increase compared with 2022. Fruit and vegetable exports by Lidl accounted for 10.4% of the national total.

Holland: Just Eat takeover by Prosus progresses as offer launched
A takeover offer for Just Eat Takeaway.com NV has been confirmed by South African tech group Prosus, which plans to merge the European group with its Brazil-based iFood business. An €20.30 per share cash offer has been recommended by the JET management board and supervisory board. A shareholder meeting and vote takes place on 8 July, with completion of the offer expected by the end of the year.

Co-op members have voted to boycott Israel, with the supermarket potentially stopping sales of its goods as soon as the summer. Three quarters of its voters backed a motion calling on the board to demonstrate "moral courage and leadership" by removing Israeli items from its shelves.

US: Trump tells Walmart to 'eat the tariffs' as retailer expects prices to increase
President Donald Trump said Walmart needs to stop "trying to blame tariffs" after the retail giant announced its products would become more expensive. Walmart's CEO said the price increases were a result of Trump's tariffs being "too high", particularly when it came to Chinese goods. Bananas, avocados and coffee are among some of the groceries that Walmart CEO Douglas McMillon said come from Colombia, Costa Rica and Peru. America also imports beets, cabbage, melons, and pineapples from Costa Rica. Sweet potatoes and citrus are imported from Peru. Walmart did not say how much prices could increase on fruits and vegetables.

US: Walmart to pay tech company $222mln over trade secret misappropriation
An Arkansas federal jury found that Walmart owes technology company Zest Labs more than $222mln over claims that the mass retailer stole Zest Labs' technology that extends the shelf life of produce. The jury concluded that Zest Labs proved its claim of "trade secret misappropriation" and found Walmart's misappropriation was "willful and malicious", according to court documents. Walmart vowed to appeal the verdict, which nearly doubles the amount the retailer was ordered to pay Zest Labs following a previous trial.
